So I just moved into a new place which only just has phone service, which means I'm relying on dialup at home for the next couple of weeks while the mysterious machinations of BT and Demon grind through the lead time for making ADSL work. This means that my home network of choice (Airport Extreme base station plugged into an ADSL gateway) won't be available until then either.
However, I discovered earlier that with a dialup connection open on my desktop Mac, it's possible to share that dialup connection out via its wireless interface - with the result that I can cart my laptop around and have wireless network access available from all over the flat, albeit a little slower than usual. Ain't it great when technology just does the Right Thing?
Of course, the first thing I did was to check for open wireless networks in the rest of this block of flats. Alas, though there are one or two wireless networks in range, their owners have been sensible and set them up properly so they aren't wide open to the world and, anyway, they're both pretty weak so it looks like it's going to be the old dialup plus connection sharing arrangement until ADSL goes live and I can plug broadband back into my skull.
The other great thing about this new place is that it's an almost-literal stone's throw from the station, so there are lots of interesting railway noises to keep me entertained.
