IF you're looking to get home to West Sutton..
AND you don't have a ticket..
AND planned engineering works mean no more trains are working through to Sutton tonight..
AND a helpful member of railway staff is finding out who's going where in order to organise taxis..
do NOT hurl abuse at the helpful member of railway staff of the "Just tell me how I'm going to FUCKING get to West Sutton!" type, as they may ask to check your ticket (as yea, and verily, the byelaws permit them to do at any time)..
..and when they discover that you don't have a valid ticket and have no intention of getting one, then for heaven's sake act like a grown-up rather than hurling more abuse and making them call Security to remove you and your mate from the station..
..and when Security come to remove you from the station, just go quietly rather than making up increasingly lame excuses interspersed with a bit more abuse.
It's evenings like this when I have a lot of respect for people whose jobs involve dealing with this kind of abuse from various morons on a daily basis, and even more so than usual on Saturday nights when a delightful hint of alcohol-fuelled unpleasantness gets added to the mix. Speaking for myself, I got a nice civilised taxi ride home arranged courtesy of the helpful member of railway staff. Be nice to those people in orange jackets on the platform - when things go wrong or engineering work means the service isn't running as normal, they are your friends.
