Gin. Tonic.

It's getting to the time of year when I get to resume my Quest For The Perfect Gin And Tonic. After a lot of painstaking, terribly stressful trial and error work last summer I came up with the following recipe which works reliably and creates a drink that doesn't (a) taste only of tonic water, which happens when there's not enough gin, or (b) have too much of a punch, which detracts from the drink as a whole when there's too much gin in there. I hereby share it with the world.

  • Take a half-pint pils glass (the type which tapers from top to bottom).
  • Drop in three reasonably large ice cubes followed by a slice of lemon or lime.
  • Add chilled gin (so the ice doesn't melt too fast) to the level of the top of the ice cubes. I usually use Gordon's but good results have been had with various other brands as well, most notably Plymouth.
  • Fill the rest of the glass with tonic. If you've got the proportions exactly right, one of those dinky cans of Schweppes will fill the glass precisely.
  • Drink, and mull over what further research may be needed in this field.

I think you're not devoting enough of the year to this. Personally I investigate this particular weighty subject annually from the beginning of May to the middle of September (the rest of the year being given over to the quest for the Greatest Whisky Of All, and time being reserved throughout the year for the most important question of all: wine).
