Mike's Geek Humour Collection
I'd like to present this small collection of 'nerd humour' -- witty,
and/or humorous prose and parodies of well-known songs and
poems. Actually, that's a terrible description. Basically, here's a
bunch of filk and other stuff which is really quite funny (if you have the
correct mindset, of course..)
Many of the articles came to me with no author information or credits, so
some pieces might be incorrectly attributed, or not attributed at all. If
you can correct any of these, please let me know. In the meantime, apologies
to anyone who's been missed out -- this is solely due to lack of information
on my part. I want any attributions to be correct, and with the 'net as it
is, some things get mangled during transmission, so the ones that have
eventually reached me may be inaccurate.
General
Parodies
A lot of the songs and poems contained herein came from a compilation
originally put together by Stefan Haenssgen <hanssgen@ira.uka.de> and
posted as the "Collection of Computer Songs And Poems".
- There must be fifty ways to leave
your editor..
- More Simon and Garfunkel! The Disks Of
Unix
- The Song Of Hakawatha. Poems
that go on for hours, with a very boring metre, can become
quite hypnotising, and make people suicidal..
- If Dr Seuss wrote manuals..
- The Sound Of Music seems to hold a peculiar
fascination for a lot of people. Here are a few from the
archives:
- There are also a mysteriously large number of parodies of Edgar
Allen Poe's classic "The Raven" out there. Anyone got any more?
- A Better Model than the one at
Data General.
- And also the very model of a
genius computational!
- Might as well face it, you're addicted to
vi(1)!
- Santa Claus is coming to town. Unfortunately, he's using
Unix.
- Boot It - yes, a Michael Jackson parody.
It had to happen, as they say.
- A brief ode to the Cray1-S.
- Cycles For Nothing - and gigabits
for free..
- Dire Straits seem to be popular.
Does this say something about computer geeks? I hope not..
- The Day Bell System Died - oldie but
goodie, if a little US-biased. *grin*
- I've been humming this particular
Bangles parody all day. Irritating..
- I'm Typing Backwards For Christmas
- Spike Milligan would be turning in his grave.
If he was dead.
- This might finish him off, though.
- However, William Shakespeare is definitely dead.
- Madonna doesn't escape, either. Good.
- Neither does Elton John. This is a
particularly fun-to-sing one.
- The Who's lyrics are.. improved in this pair of excellent
parodies by Jamie Mason - "Unix Wizard"
and "The Swapper"
Stuff I've written
OK, I've written a couple of things which ended up in alt.humor.best-of-usenet,
for reasons which I can't quite work out. Vanity dictates, however, that they
get included here. Ho hum. The more serious
stuff is on a different page.
NOTE: UNIX® IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF SOMEONE OR OTHER. HOWEVER, I'M
NOT SURE WHOSE TURN IT IS TO OWN UNIX® THIS WEEK, SO JUST
ASSUME THAT THE TRADEMARKS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED. OK? (Actually, I believe it's
a trademark of The Open Group, if that helps)
